Bristol and Me 1982 to 2002 Self-published 2019

I captured these images, a visual journey through my personal and professional life during my first twenty years in Bristol between 1982 and 2002. By 1983 my hobby had become a career. My passion for photographing people, and inspiring others who may not have access to photographic equipment and skills, informed my practice as a freelance photographer and teacher. In 1984, I set up the Barton Hill Photography Project, which I ran for eleven years.

Bristol and Me is a physical representation of my mental and emotional map of Bristol, consisting of personal pictures and projects, commissions, and images from my freelance practice documenting community groups throughout the city. Later I used photography, both personally and professionally, in an attempt to move beyond the pretty picture to express ideas.

“Very moving, evocative and also really good to see stories about Bristol people.”

“The stories about your Easton neighbours & the unpaid carers were humbling to read.”
